Understanding the causes of stain
While there are a number of ways to get rid of stains, it is essential to know the number of reasons that could lead to them. The first step to a brighter, whiter smile is to learn exactly what causes stained teeth, and half your battle will be won. Dr. Priyank Mathur from Smilekraft Dentistry lists the main culprits behind those unattractive stains:
Dark-coloured food Coffee, black tea, chocolate, red wine, some curries, dark sauces and various fruits, such as grapes, blueberries and pomegranates — have the greatest potential to stain teeth. These food and beverages are high in chromogens, pigment-producing substances with a penchant for sticking to tooth enamel.
Poor dental hygiene Neglecting some of the most oral care techniques such as flossing, brushing and rinsing leads to bacteria and builds stains. This will not only keep your dental visits at bay, but also maintain the natural enamel of your pearly whites.
Acids and sugar The enamel becomes thinner revealing the yellow-brown dentin underneath and showcasing yellower teeth due to a number of acidic food and beverages such as citrus, soft drinks, sodas, etc. The same goes with high sugar intake in a number of soft drinks. When the sugar sits there too long it softens the enamel and encourages the development of plaque, diminishing the natural whiteness of the teeth.
There are, of course a number of additional factors that may lead to extrinsic or intrinsic staining such as genetics, a particular kind of diseases and some medications.
